History

The founder of NUS Consulting and, in fact, the architect of the entire energy cost management industry was Theodore E. Maynard. While attending university, Mr. Maynard discovered that energy suppliers were not required to provide consumers with the most cost effective rate option available. Then, like today, choosing the "best rate” was ultimately the responsibility of the consumer. Recognizing the burden and additional cost that this placed upon consumers, Mr. Maynard, in 1933, created NUS Consulting to help energy intensive businesses better manage and reduce their energy costs.

Starting from a modest office in New York City, NUS Consulting has grown into 13 international offices employing over 375 professionals. NUS Consulting currently advises 10,000 clients ranging from multi-national corporations to single location enterprises. Our clients represent a broad spectrum of industries including manufacturing, chemical, retail, healthcare, technology, mining, hospitality, pharmaceuticals, banking, transportation, financial services and government agencies.

In 1990, subsequent to Mr. Maynard’s passing, NUS Consulting was purchased by its then President and Chairman of the Board Mr. Sarkis Soultanian. Mr. Soultanian started his career at NUS Consulting in 1958 as a mailroom clerk. Within 10 years, Mr. Soultanian would work his way from the mailroom to become the company’s youngest Vice President and Director. In the ensuing 20 years, Mr. Soultanian would be one of the senior executives primarily responsible for the company’s growth and international expansion. Upon purchasing NUS Consulting from the Maynard family in 1990, Mr. Soultanian led the company for an additional 8 years. Under his stewardship, NUS Consulting built NUS Corporate Plaza (our current headquarters facility), expanded its global reach and made the implementation of new technologies a priority.

Today, NUS Consulting is led by Mr. Soultanian’s sons Gary and Richard. Together, they are committed to building upon NUS Consulting’s long-standing tradition of success and industry leadership.
