Telkom is still South Africa’s primary and predominant telecommunications provider. With the 2010 World Cup just around the corner, Telkom has been approached by the FIFA to supply the Network for Media coverage of this historic event. As can be imagined, a huge volume of voice and data traffic will move over the network during this time. FIFA requires a reliable partner to provide fixed-line components of the necessary telecommunications infrastructure.
So while soccer fans from around the globe gear up for the FIFA World Cup later this year, Telkom has already invested millions of Rands ensuring that audiences all over the world are able to view the matches. All 10 stadiums are “media ready” with a primary link being installed at each stadium. Each provides up to 20 gigabytes of data for broadcast purposes as well as 2.5 gigabytes for media and IT requirements. A second link has also been installed at each venue providing necessary back-up.
The 2009 FIFA Confederations Cup was a practice run for Telkom which achieved 100 percent broadcast efficiency having experienced no downtime in communications. Telkom is confident that they are ready for the World Cup, but will not rest on its laurels despite delivering flawlessly during the FIFA Confederations Cup. FIFA expects 99.99 percent uptime during the World Cup.
