France Power Pricing Trends | 12 June 2023
The power market rose again last week, closing on Friday at €183.61/MWh on the Baseload CAL 24 product. The market remains highly volatile and is reacting to the unscheduled shutdown of a reactor at the Cattenom nuclear power station following a fault in a turbine. The upward trend in the price of natural gas is also having an impact on the electricity market. The weekly average price increased from 157.07 €/MWh to 166.79 €/MWh for CAL 2024 and from 119.49 €/MWh to 128.79 €/MWh for CAL 2025.

The natural gas market rose last week. On Wednesday, the Norwegian operator Gassco announced that it was extending maintenance on two production sites, which had a downward impact on European natural gas imports.
Demand for natural gas in Asia is currently buoyant, against a backdrop of very hot weather in China and South Asia. French gas stocks are at around 54.96%. At European level, stocks are at 71.51% of capacity. The weekly average price increased from 43.80 €/MWh to 44.15 €/MWh for CAL 2024 and from 41.70 €/MWh to 41.87 €/MWh for CAL 2025.

The price of Brent fell at the end of the week, following the release of new pessimistic business forecast data from China, as well as the impact of inflation on the Chinese economy. The weekly average price of Brent crude oil
decreased from 69.65 €/bbl to 70.84 €/bbl.
