The continued rise in the price of CO2 (a new all-time record price of 42.99 euros/tonne came to be on 17 March) has led to a further increase in the weekly average price of electricity, from 55.88 €/MWh to 56.28 €/MWh for CAL 2021 and from €53.32/MWh to €53.61/MWh for CAL 2022.

Rising oil prices, as well as the expectation building up for increased demand of natural gas, in anticipation of a gradual phasing out of coal, are the two main reasons for the increase in the weekly average price of natural gas, from 16.64 euros/MWh to 17.55 euros/MWh for CAL 2021 and from 16.20 euros/MWH to 16.65 euros/MWh for CAL 2022.

Optimism gave way to pessimism on the energy markets last week: the announcement of new confinement measures in Europe, delays in vaccination programmes and uncertainty around the AstraZeneca vaccine have weighed on oil prices. The average weekly price of Brent dropped from 57.47 €/bbl to 55.80 €/bbl.
