Futures on the electricity market rose sharply last week. The Baseload CAL 2023 price reached its highest level on Friday (115.10 €/MWh), surpassing even its record level of 22/12/2021. Electricity has closely followed the trend of natural gas and CO2. Its evolution is also representative of increased in the marginal costs for power plant’s production across the continent. Average weekly prices leapt from 126.91 €/MWh to 145.81 €/MWh for CAL 2023 & from 94.83 €/MWh to 99.35 €/MWh for CAL 2024.

Future trends on the natural gas market are bullish. Market participants are very attentive to any event in the tensions between Russia and Ukraine. The Nord Stream 2 pipeline could be a means of pressure in the event of open conflict, a bad signal for Europe, whose supply of natural gas remains tight. Average weekly prices grew from 43.93 €/MWh to 52.35 €/MWh for CAL 2023 and from 29.50 €/MWh to 32.76 €/MWh for CAL 2024.

Oil prices continued to rise last week. Demand remains strong, while OPEC production is not keeping pace. A conflict in Ukraine could destabilize global supply. The average weekly price of Brent got a boost from 77.07 €/bbl to 79.37 €/bbl.
