Trading Hub Europe GmbH (THE) has set the gas storage levy pursuant to Section 35e of the German Energy Industry Act (EnWG) at 2.89 EUR/MWh for the period starting 1 July 2025.

The levy continues to finance measures aimed at meeting statutory gas storage level requirements, as established in the Energy Industry Act since 2022. Since then, THE has implemented various storage-related measures to strengthen supply security.

The current levy determination takes into account previously executed and forecasted market activities by THE, the levy-relevant volume, and the higher gas consumption recorded last winter from SLP and RLM offtake points.

For the second half of 2025, no active gas storage injections by THE are currently anticipated - this assumption was made in coordination with the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action (BMWK) and with the involvement of the Federal Network Agency (BNetzA).

The next regular review and adjustment of the levy is scheduled for 1 January 2026.

Impacts on the energy market:

  • The levy contributes to long-term supply security by financing strategic gas storage reserves.
  • It provides planning certainty for market participants, as the levy is announced and adjusted on a regular basis.
  • The reduction in active storage injections (as announced for 2025) may contribute to market relief in the medium term.
