Who is NUS Consulting Group, S.A.?

NUS Consulting Group, S.A. is a consulting firm specializing in energy management and sustainability solutions for energy intensive consumers. We started our operations in Spain and Portugal in the mid-1990s, and currently have more than 30 years of experience leading this sector in the Iberian market.

We have experienced the liberalization of local electricity and natural gas markets in the field, providing our clients with solutions tailored to the local possibilities as they have become available.

We work for companies in a wide range of sectors, both industrial and service sectors. To provide them with maximum value, we have the support of NUS Consulting Group at an international level and our local presence. This allows us to gain an inside understanding of regulatory changes as they happen, as well as of the electricity and natural gas suppliers available.

Energy Management Services in Portugal

NUS Consulting Group provides a comprehensive energy and sustainability management solution tailored to each clientโ€™s needs. Our services are based on modules comprising energy risk management, supply contracts negotiation, budget creation and tracking, analysis and optimization of regulated costs, invoice validation, and online energy data systems.

Depending on each clientโ€™s needs, we can provide pro-forma invoice calculation services, demand curve monitoring, CO2 emissions reporting and monitoring, renewable GOs purchasing, PPA/VPPAs negotiation, regulatory compliance with Article 8 of the European Energy Efficiency Directive (EED), and others.

We also inform our customers about regulatory changes and programs for electricity-intensive and gas-intensive consumers, Active Demand Response Services (SRAD), or those related to the Special Electricity Tax (IEE) or the Hydrocarbon Tax (IH).

Energy Markets in Portugal

The electricity and natural gas markets in Portugal are characterized by their dynamism and sophistication. There is a wide range of options for purchasing energy at fixed, variable, or flexible prices, in the short, medium, and long term. In addition to price and contract term, other terms and conditions that may impact on the cost can be negotiated, such as early contract terminations, consumption thresholds, bank guarantees, and payment terms.

The electricity generation mix includes a large contribution from renewable energy, while virtually all natural gas is imported via LNG and through two gas pipelines from North Africa.

Interconnections with the rest of the European continent are very limited, which is why we often refer to the Iberian market as an โ€œenergy island.โ€

At the same time, transport and distribution tariffs are complex, with up to six contracting and electricity consumption periods in Spain and four in Portugal. This increases the risk of undertaking additional costs if the contract does not match the demand profile, as a result of which consumers should be monitoring and analyzing their quarter-hourly demand on an ongoing basis to assess potential optimizations of regulated costs.
