This collaboration will create a unified global framework for reporting and verifying emissions, simplifying the landscape for organisations and improving the comparability and credibility of GHG data.
What is the GHG โ ISO Partnership?
The Greenhouse Gas Protocol (GHG Protocol) and the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) have announced a strategic partnership to harmonise global greenhouse gas (GHG) carbon reporting standards and jointly develop new, co-branded international standards.
Currently, both organisations publish widely used but independent frameworks for calculating, reporting and verifying GHG emissions, which can create inconsistencies in how organisations measure and communicate their GHG carbon footprints. The new partnership aims to create one common global language for GHG accounting, improving comparability and clarity.
What changes will this bring?
The existing standards from both the GHG Protocol and ISO will remain in effect until the new co-branded standards are published, with additional information on the transition periods and timelines of the new co-branded standards yet to be provided. The GHG Protocol and ISO emphasise that the shift will be transparent, gradual, and designed to minimise disruption for reporting organisations.
The currently available standards including the ISO1406X family of standards, and the GHG Protocol Corporate Accounting and Reporting, Scope 2 and 3 Standards will be harmonized into unified, co-branded international standards. The new partnership will also be co-developing new standards including a product-level GHG carbon footprint standard.
What are the benefits of the GHG-ISO partnership?
With both the GHG Protocol and the ISO having their own set of standards, it is difficult to directly assess and compare different organisationโs GHG data. The new GHG-ISO partnership will streamline and facilitate this by creating dual-logo, globally consistent standards for corporate, product, and project-level GHG accounting and verification.
Key benefits include:
- Greater comparability: Organisations will be able to benchmark and assess emissions data more easily.
- Simplified reporting: A common approach reduces complexity for companies navigating multiple frameworks.
- Stronger credibility: Unified standards boost confidence in carbon footprints and disclosures with more reliable emissions information, supporting investors and stakeholders.
